Submissions to the Journal of Global South Studies (JGSS) should be approximately 10,000 words, including source citations. In special instances the editor may allow longer papers to be published. All submissions should also include an abstract of no more than 250 words. Manuscripts, in .docx format (MSWord), should be submitted through our online submission portal.

Manuscripts must follow The Chicago Manual of Style (18th Edition). JGSS does not cite references or sources in the body of the paper with name of author, date of publication, and page number in brackets. The journal uses consecutive regular number citations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.), NOT ROMAN NUMERALS, in the body of the paper with corresponding numbers and sources listed separately under Notes at the end of the paper.

JGSS is dedicated to following ethical practices in publishing. Therefore, we expect that authors do their own research and writing ethically with full responsibility. However, where generative AI technology has been used, the author must describe how and to what extent it was applied (including but not limited to brainstorming, editing, suggesting titles, revising, finding and summarizing research sources, etc.). We expect the author to deal transparently with the editors and provide a detailed acknowledgment and attribution statement. We reserve the right to adjudge suitable use of generative AI. It is important to verify the accuracy and validity of all AI-generated content, and it is the author’s responsibility to fact-check any AI contribution to their manuscript.

Authors should not list any AI tool as an author, nor cite AI as an author. AI tools do not meet the requirements for authorship since they cannot assume ethical or legal responsibility for their work.

Basic AI tools used for spelling, grammar, proofreading, or references (including citation managers) do not need to be disclosed.

Upload two files as part of your manuscript:

  • an anonymized version of your manuscript from which any author names, emails, and affiliations have been removed (this version will be shared with reviewers)
  • a separate file with any author names, institutional affiliation, and contact information

Please refer to the Author Guidelines section for instructions on organizing your submissions and for further information on the expectations and requirements for a submission. This section goes has in-depth information regarding submissions for articles and for book reviews.
