The Study Abroad Experiences of Heritage Spanish Speakers

Abstract
This qualitative study investigated the study abroad experiences of U.S.-based undergraduate heritage speakers of Spanish who studied abroad in Spanish-speaking countries. Data were collected via online surveys and semi- structured follow-up interviews. Themes discussed include comfort in the study abroad context due to heritage speaker background, peer cohort dynamics and relationships, perception and treatment by the local community, and long-term impacts on family relationships. The study offers recommendations for structuring and implementing study abroad programs that effectively address the unique needs of heritage speakers and support greater study abroad participation.
